Jeff Rowley has successfully paddled in to ride 50-foot plus waves at Peahi ‘Jaws’ in Hawaii to become the first Australian to ride these waves without a jet-ski tow-in.

By completing the feat, Rowley fulfilled his personal ‘Charge For Charity’ quest while raising money for Breast Cancer Australia.

Rowley flew from the island of Oahu to Maui Tuesday night and arrived at the infamous Peahi ‘Jaws’ clifftop before sunrise to see the 50-60 foot waves (15-18 metres) for the first time.

The surf at Peahi, aka ‘Jaws’, is considered the world’s biggest and most dangerous and until recently has been considered impossible to catch and ride without the use of a jet-ski tow-in and foot straps.

Rowley and a small group of big wave surfers, including Shane Dorian and Garret McNamara, pushed the boundaries of big wave surfing by refusing to tow-in and choosing to paddle in to the monster waves.

“The waves were moving about 50km/h an hour and the wind was absolutely howling so every instinct is telling you it cant be done, but we did it. It’s unbelievable,” Rowley said.

“I’m so proud to be the first Aussie to paddle in at Jaws, it was a historic day and we pushed the limits and survived.”

Come Hell High WaterWoodshed Films, Patagonia and Nixon are proud to announce the world tour for Keith Malloy’s debut film project, Come Hell or High Water. The film explores the history and progression of the sport of bodysurfing and the pureness that comes from riding a wave. Shot primary in 16mm, the film takes a unique look at the culture, beauty and simplicity of the sport, capturing the stories and locations of those who belong to this community.

While Keith is most widely known for his time in the water as a surfer, his exploration into the world of bodysurfing began some 10 years ago when he wanted to reconnect with the ocean and did so through bodysurfing. Said Malloy about this project, “It’s about taking a breath and kicking your feet in the big blue sea.”

A sold-out crowd watched the world premiere of Come Hell or High Water last weekend at the New York Film Festival. The film makes its west-coast debut this Friday, September 23, at the La Paloma Theater in Encinitas, California and will continue to crisscross the globe with more stops in Southern, Central and Northern California, North Carolina, London and more. A portion of the proceeds from the tour’s ticket sales will be donated to The Plastic Pollution Coalition, a global alliance aimed at working toward a world free of plastic pollution and its toxic impacts.

“The beauty of having an amazing wetsuit is the fact that you can surf out of the way places that are colder, and actually stay out longer and get more waves. And that makes us all happier.” –Keith Malloy, Patagonia surf ambassador

When we build a product we want to build the best. When it came to wetsuits, we wanted something warmer, more flexible, better fitting and tough enough to withstand extended use. We started with a combination of limestone neoprene, polyester and nylon, like all the other brands, but then pushed further, unsatisfied with just tweaking the status quo. Looking to what divers, sailors and fishermen had been using all these years to stay warm in and on the ocean we tried wool. Wanting the finest, we chose merino.

It’s the merino lining that gives our wetsuits their added warmth without added rubber. But our patented merino wool grid (U.S. Patent No. 7395553) is just one part of the successful equation. The neoprene we use has a high-density nitrogen cell structure for maximum warmth and durability, the post consumer recycled polyester jersey increases durability, and the quality craftsmanship and attention to little details ensures a great performing, well-made wetsuit.

Patagonia wetsuits are decidedly warmer than standard nylon-lined suits. But that’s not all. They also wear longer, dry faster – and because we use post-consumer recycled polyester, merino softened without chlorine (a pollutant that can harm living organisims), and no PVC (which is made with phthalate, a known endocrine disrupter) – they are more environmentally conscious than other suits. We make them in four weights – R1®, R2®, R3®, and R4® – for all water temperatures, and in several styles for men and women.

Schott’s heritage is a true-blue, real-deal, piece of Americana. The iconic styles produced by hand for nearly 100 years have become infused in American culture and have served as battle flags for the American spirit.

In 1913, as Ford’s new Model T began to crowd the already bustling streets of New York City, two brothers, the sons of a Russian immigrant, went after their piece of the American Dream. Irving and Jack Schott started making raincoats in a basement on the Lower East Side of Manhattan which were then sold by street peddlers door to door. Irving Schott’s leather jackets were lovingly branded with the name of his favorite cigar – the Perfecto. By the mid-twenties, Schott NYC was revolutioniz ing the way Americans dressed for the outdoors when they were the first to put a zipper on a jacket.

Eager to innovate, it was no surprise that Irving Schott then set his sights on another American classic in the making – the motorcycle. In 1928, Irving Schott designed and produced the first leather motorcycle jacket. Retailing for $5.50 at a Long Island Harley Davidson distributor, the Perfecto was durable, rugged, and immediately embraced. To this new generation of “bikers,” the Perfecto was a symbol of the excitement, adventure and danger that fueled their fascination with motorcycles.

But as the country and the world turned its attention overseas, so did Schott. Commissioned by the US Air Force at the start of WWII, Irving Schott designed and produced a “bomber jacket” that would serve and protect Our Boys as they fought for liberty in the air over Europe and the Pacific. And on deck, servicemen kept out the cold with Schott’s classic melton wool naval pea coat. Rugged and warm, these leather and wool jackets would be produced by Schott for the US Military
for the next 60 years.

With WWII over, this country was witnessing the rise of a new rebellion one that would be fought with fast cars and Rock and Roll. In 1954, the now cult classic “The Wild Ones” featured the hot young actor, Marlon Brando, perched on his motorcycle wearing his Schott Perfecto®. The subsequent spike in popularity of the Perfecto® surprisingly resulted in decreased sales. The jackets were banned by school systems around the country because they symbolized a burgeoning teen demographic, the hoodlum. Just one year later, the Perfecto® was catapulted to the height of its popularity when a love for speed ended the life of the quintessential hoodlum. It is said that James Dean could hardly ever be seen without his Perfecto®.

Throughout the 70s and 80s Schott became synonymous with the punk rock movement. The current wave of rebellion came to the streets of downtown New York City through underground music venue, CBGB. The Schott Perfecto® was the uniform for rock stars like The Ramones, Blondie, Joan Jett and The Sex Pistols.

As the world grew smaller and international trade became common place through online shopping and global markets, Schott expanded overseas where “Made in America” was revered and coveted. Peacoats, Duffle coats, flight jackets, motorcycle jackets, nylon outerwear, knits and sportswear became available worldwide as Schott NYC represented the heritage of America and the rebel inside everyone.

Schott NYC is still owned and run by the third and fourth generations of the Schott family who still manufacture most of their clothing in the United States. In an old brick building the classic styles that have, and will continue to, connect with the American spirit are cut and sewn by the hands of trained craftspeople. There is a feeling with putting on a Perfecto® that cannot be replicated or described, it is a persona: the history of America’s bad boy is seeped into the heavy cowhide and chrome hardware. The sense of pride in country is behind every Peacoat’s anchor buttons. The courage to face the uncertainty on the open road and all the freedom that comes with it, is in the hearts of the Schott family as they look towards the future.

Carver Skateboards now available at Mission Surf !!! These babies are the closest thing to surfing since surfing…

Carver institutes their patented front truck designed to create the same fluid dynamic for a skateboard that a surfboard has in the water. What gives it this ability is the extra axis of movement provided by the truck’s rotating arm, giving the nose of the board lateral thrust, in addition to the usual rail-to rail turn. With this extra turning capacity, the back truck becomes a pivot from which to snap turns, the way fins hold in the water while the surfboard’s rocker slides on the surface of a wave. This dynamic also creates the much sought after ability to pump the board for speed, and is the feature unique to Carver that finally delivers on the long-promised feel of surfing a skateboard. Riding fakie is also like riding a surfboard, but backwards, where the nose feels squirrelly, and for this reason the C7 is a front truck only. The arm rotates smoothly on precision industrial thrust bearings, and is dampened by a fully adjustable, heavy-duty internal die spring that allows each rider to customize the feel of their board.

These things really work! Come down to the store and try one out for yourself.

Kelly Slater makes history again! He earned his 11th ASP world title Wednesday at the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Search at Ocean Beach in San Francisco.

In 4 to 6 foot offshore conditions, Slater tallied a heat score of 15.13, eliminating Daniel Ross by .73 to clinch his record title – #11.

“It feels like the circle has been completed,” said Slater. “I knew somewhere in the back of my mind eleven was there, but I honestly don’t think about twelve. I was born on 2/11 and now to win on 11/2, it’s a weird coincidence and it does feel like the completion of something. It was a goal I set at the beginning of the year and luckily I got to it.”

Coincidentally, Slater’s second consecutive ASP Title also comes a year to the day that three-time world champion Andy Irons died. Kelly said this immediately after his victory…

“I started thinking about Andy a couple days ago,” told Slater. “And today, it’s like he’s watching over us. We had a little memorial for him today, and now the waves, the weather, it just feels like he was watching over use. Emotionally it’s still a very hard thing to reconcile with.”

At 39 years old Slater, who is from Cocoa Beach, Fla., has the distinction of being the youngest and oldest world champion in professional surfing. In a career that’s spanned 20 years, he’s won a record 48 tour events, more than $3 million in prize money and eleven world titles. His first title came in ’92, and by ’98 he had accrued a total of six. He then stepped away from competition for two years, returning to the tour in 2001 and winning his first “comeback” crown in 2005.

Kelly finished second at the Quiksilver Pro New York, and won the Hurley Pro in California (he met Australia’ Owen Wright in all three finals, setting yet another ASP benchmark). Then a second place finish at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal in early October all but sealed the deal. From there Slater just needed “four good waves.” Those of which he tore his way to victory!

Congratulations on #11!
